“Although people are only exposed to these substances for a short time each year, they are much more toxic than the pollutants we breathe every day,” says Dr. Gordon.
The new study, published online July 1 in the journal Particle and Fibre Toxicology, is believed to be the first to examine the effects of firework exposure in human cells and living animals.
Fireworks emit large amounts of particulate matter that if breathed in can lead to negative health effects such as heart attacks, asthma aggravation, decreased lung function, coughing and difficulty breathing. On July 4 in 2022 the air quality reached unhealthy to hazardous levels in Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties according to the AQMD.
