I just use a washable organic cotton cover to protect it and to wash it regularly.

Ritz Professional Heavy Weight Ironing Board Pad
I don't recommend this product since many are complaining of not natural toxic odor. It makes this a lie that is not truly safe or natural like the claim. The best is to find certified organic cotton or wool when you are not sure of the source. The certification guarantees that no allowed chemicals are used! See the product here
