Many of us do not realize how toxic conventional dishwashing detergents can be!

They contain chemicals, irritants, and pollutants that affect not only sensitive individuals, pregnant women, the elderly, pets, children, and wildlife, but all of us, too! Yet, they are sold in regular grocery stores as harmless products. Avoid fragranced products and colored liquid products. Avoid conventional brands.

Conventional Cleaners 

Conventional dishwasher detergents contain toxic ingredients and chemicals that are cheap to produce, harsh on us, the planet, and the environment. They are linked with asthma and respiratory damage, skin allergies and irritations, development and reproductive toxicity, posing cancer, and environmental hazards. To keep our house a healthy place, we need to ditch conventional cleaning products and use natural ones! ​
❌ ​Besides many popular brands such as Clorox, Ajax, Lysol, Mr. Clean, Arm & Hammer, Up&Up, Windex, with products rated F- toxic by ewg.org, there are many "greenwashing" products around.

 

Greenwashing Cleaners

❌ Greenwashing companies are filling their “natural" products with synthetic petrochemical, oleochemical emollients, thickeners, detergents, fragrances, and preservatives.

Brands such as Method, Safeway, Green Works (a Clorox company), Babyganics, and Mrs.Meyer’s are still classified as toxic by ewg.org, with products classified D and F. ​

❌ Many "natural cleaners" contain controversial ingredients mixed in their almost natural formula such as preservatives, dyes, fragrances, surfactants, bleach, alcohol, quats, hydrogen peroxide, or any other harmful chemicals. 

Methylisothiazolinone:  preservative skin sensitizer, linked to allergies, lung, neurological, and organ toxicity. Plus it is very toxic to aquatic life. Found in BetterLife Brand! Check at the bottom of the page the greenwashing brands.

Since there is no government regulation of the words: “organic” or “ natural.” ​We need to buy USDA-certified organic products and when not available we need to carefully read the labels.

That’s why we need to have the right information that allows us to buy a better detergent to protect us, our family, pets, and the environment.  Use your nose and eyes. Read the ingredients list. Avoid fragranced products and colored liquid products.

Many of dishwashing liquid products contain 2 toxic synthetic preservatives :

• Methylisothiazolinone: synthetic preservative, The US EPA reports the LC50 value is very toxic to aquatic life.

• Benzisothiazolinone: synthetic preservative, toxic,  is not anaerobically degradable. and skin sensitizer.

Organic Cleaners

Safer Preservatives:

Citric acid, Lonicera Japonica (Organic Honeysuckle), rosemary extract.

Brands liquid detergent products with very high pH don't need preservatives for example dr. Bronner's.
