❌ Degradable: when a material breaks down using a dangerous chemical reaction. Made originally with conventional plastic that is treated with a chemical additive that allows it to break down into smaller plastic pieces, contributing to worldwide microplastic pollution. An example is Oxo- degradable products.
❌ Recyclable or reusable: a material is recyclable or reusable only if it successfully reaches a qualified recyclable facility. We know that many recyclables are found in landfills, dumping grounds, fields, streets, rivers, and oceans. Recycling is costly, and because the cross-contamination making disposed material not suitable to be reused. Once an item has been successfully recycled it cannot be recycled again becoming a final pollutant item.
Example: reusable shopping bag made with recycled plastic, once is broken is useless and polluting.
The claims of "Recyclable and reusable " are often mentioned by brands as a promotional Greenwashing marketing trick, to sell "eco or green" when they know it is not.
🍃 Biodegradable: this is when a material is able to decompose into natural elements but leaves methane and inorganic compounds during the process. Biodegradable is not like compostable. Example: Paper.
🍃 Compostable: this is when a material decomposes back into natural elements without leveling toxins behind during the process. Compostable items, not only disappear but have also added nutrients to the soil.
